After disposing of the Mind Flayers and storing their dismembered hands in their packs, the party moved south west. They opened a door and found a circular room with a door to the north and to the north west.

The iridescent floor of this chamber was etched with sigils and stanzas of Qualith, as is a glass panel on the southern wall. A large hole in the floor provides access to the floor below. The party also discovered a similar teleportation circle to the one they found on the first floor. Evan David leapt forward to step on the circle, but the party convinced him to wait until they explored the rest of the floor.

The party found the door to the north and could not be opened by skill or by force. They did find that the door to the north west was unlocked.

In this room they found three large cages housing a panoply of hideous mutated monsters. They groped desperately at the bars of their cages with malformed digits. The party was able to determined that these malformed mutants were likely humans or Githyanki in their past life.

The party tried to break the bars of the cage to let the poor creatures go, but the bars seemed to be made of something that was impervious to strength, steel, or magic.

Evan David moved to explore a room to the east of the cages and dozens of rats ran out when he opened the door.

Thin, spiralling shelves lined the walls of this chamber. Scuttling along them were dozens of rats, their brains glowing with a dull blue light. A throne sat in the centre of the floor. Evan David investigated the throne and found no inscriptions or switches than would give an indication of the purpose or whom the poor bastard was on the throne. Evan David determined he was human and wore a robe, but the rats had disposed of any other clues. The party moved on to a room to the north west.

The room contained floor to ceiling tanks of sepia fluid blocking the line of sight through this room. Inside the glass tubes were humanoid forms stripped back to the muscular or skeletal systems. Some of them are mutated with additional limbs and organs. Once again it appeared that horrific experiments were being performed on humans and Githyanki for some unknown reason. The number of additional limbs seemed to have been attached in a manner to entertain rather than just to learn.

Suddenly two Mind Flayers stepped out from behind a tank – a Mind Flayer Assistant and the lead ‘scientist’ Thilliog. Horrified by their ‘experiments’, the party wasted no time moving forward to attack them. The Mind Flayer assistant was easily disposed of by our heroes, but just as Thilliog was about to fall a restoration pod opened and a Star Spawn Seer leapt out.

The party had encountered a Star Spawn Seer before and knew them to be a terrible adversary. The party quickly disposed of Thilliog and moved forward to attack the Star Spawn Seer. The Star Spawn Seer alternated between attacks with his Comet Staff and Psychic Orb. Both attacks dealt fearsome damage, but the party was able to finally defeat the Star Spawn Seer. The Star Spawn Seer dispersed into a cloud of ash leaving nothing but an empty robe behind.

Evan David cautiously inspected the robe and was relieved to find that it was not the robe that Kaelyn once wore.

Acanthodoris slashed at one of the tanks, finally chopping off the top to try and release the mutated creature inside. Once the top was hacked off, the creature still just bobbed up and down in the fluid. Seeing that there was no help they could offer, they moved on.

The party agreed to go back to the teleportation disc once they explored the rest of the rooms on this level.

The party walked past the teleportation disc and opened the door to the north east. This room seemed be a room that were the chambers for a Mind Flayer.

This clean, organised chamber contained a glass and metal pod, a large pool filled with tadpoles, a glass wall pod and a series of glass and metal shelves. The burnished metal walls were engraved with enormous brains and tentacles. There was another door to the north east,

The party moved towards the north east but first destroyed the pool of tadpoles before they left. The tadpoles splashed on the floor, wriggling helplessly before they died.

The party opened the door and found that this seemed to be a treasure room that contained ancient elvish artifacts.

Along the walls were several items of immense value:

  • A platinum crown of elvish design which incorporates moons and waves, encrusted with sapphires along the motifs (15,000 gp)
  • A necklace of black pearls with a ruby-eyed obsidian spider pendant (12,000 gp)
  • A model ship gilded with gold and silver filigree in a crystal bottle (8,000 gp)
  • A silken mantle that resembles a large spider web with gemstones embroidered in (2,500 gp)
  • A portrait of a beautiful elven queen in full royal regalia holding a moon-topped sceptre (2,500 gp)

The party gathered all the items up and returned to the teleportation circle.

The party returned to the teleportation circle and first put a severed Mind Flayer hand on the teleportation circle to see if it was transported to the other circle. Evan David leapt down to the lower floor through the hole in the floor to find that it did not re-appear on the other teleportation circle. They threw down a rope to Evan David and he pulled himself back up.

Evan David prepared to step on the portal but first Acanthodoris used his Psionic power to be able to stay in contact with Evan David.

Evan David stepped on the teleportation circle and found that his was transported to a new domed room. Pulsing lights of myriad colours created a circle on the floor of this dome. A glass panel hangs on one of the walls. A severed Mind Flayer hand lays on the ground.

Evan David stepped off of the teleportation circle and back on and was teleported back to the rest of the party. Evan David informed the party of what he saw and they all joined him and were teleported to the domed room.

The party saw that the domed room was connected to a tunnel that circled off north and south, they decided to continue north.

They discovered that the tunnel was perfectly smooth and symmetrical. It either was the handiwork of elves or some otherworldly craftmanship. The tunnel soon came to another domed room.

Stacked on shelves in this domed room are dozens of canopic jars, whose design varies from mesmerising geometric patterns to hideous tentacled curves. All the jars contained brains that appear to be of human of Githyanki in origin. The party continued on.

The tunnel led to another domed room. A curved ceiling of iridescent metal, covered in indecipherable inscriptions and patterns pressed down upon them. A plinth of glass rises up in the centre of the room.

The party noticed two doors to the north, but a long passage led south to a large central room. The party continued south, drawn to the central room.

The party found that this central dome was larger than any other in the complex. Within the area is a broad, deep pool filled with softly effervescing purple fluid. A cylindrical hole in the ceiling allows access to the cavern above. Once the party entered the room, the entire dome became transparent and the sea could be seen above them. They could see all manner of sea creatures swimming above them including Slarkrethel swimming above them in the distance.

The party cautiously moved forward and two Brain Golems rushed towards them as an Elder Brain raised slowly from the pool in front of them. The battle was engaged!

The Brain Golems attacked in unison with the Elder Brain joining the fray.

The party heard in their mind that the Elder Brain’s name was Zellix’Phor. They could hear in their mind as he directed the Brain Golems. The Elder Brain attacked the party with Mind Blasts, but the battle was turned when Galo banished the two Brain Golems.

The party then heard Zellix’Phor speak to Slarkrethel swimming above them.

“Come”

Slarkrethel swam down towards the dome.
