If there is one setting that I am always looking for additional ideas for it is the proverbial inn and tavern. I don’t know of any adventures or campaigns where the party hasn’t had to visit at least two or three inns or taverns. I also find that inns and taverns designed in written campaigns are usually quite limited.

Imagine my excitement when I saw the Local Legends Tavern Kit. The Tavern Kit includes the following items:

• 10 amazingly detailed and named taverns detailed with plot hooks, legends, NPCs, recommended opponents, and a tavern game for the patrons.
• 10 exterior and interior illustrations of the taverns to spur your imagination and ideas.
• 60 interesting NPCs that can be used for the recommended taverns or for anywhere in your adventures.
• 10 illustrated play mats for the tavern games.
• Inncounters Guide – a guide to help design tavern adventure and flesh out the tavern experience and gameplay. This includes ideas for incidents, brawls, plot twists, and and ideas for opponents.
• a card deck that provides reference for the tavern games and ‘the first thing you notice’ idea for each and every NPC.

Simply put, this is an excellent resource that every Dungeon Master should have. Many times I have had to create my own taverns, NPCs, and tavern games. This will be a reference I will use over and over.

My only criticism is that I would have loved to also have the tavern battle maps or floor plans included. Although the interior illustrations help, They are a three-dimensional view and they doesn’t allow for the use of miniatures on the illustrations.

Perhaps this is by design as it lets the Dungeon Masters create their own floor plans adding additional details and items.

Regardless, this is a product that I can’t recommend enough. Pick it up at your local bookstore or game shop. You won’t be disappointed.
