A source books that has been invaluable in my latest campaign has been the ‘Flee Mortals’ book by MCDM. MCDM also has another book ‘Where Evils Lives’, but I have used the ‘Flee Mortals’ source book almost exclusively so far. ‘Flee Mortals’ is intended to be a monster manual as opposed to ‘Where Evil Lives’ which is positioned to be a source book for epic boss battles.

I was looking for inspiration in my Middle-Earth campaign as I wanted to use the more traditional monsters of Orcs and Goblins but I wanted to have some uniqueness and originality. I didn’t wanted to roll out the armies of minion Orcs and Goblins with the Orc Boss or Goblin Boss at the end. The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying books provided some ideas, but the Orc and Goblin rosters were still pretty vanilla.

One day I came across ‘Flee Mortals’ on DnDBeyond and I was enthralled. There was a multitude of different types of Orcs, Gnolls, Goblin, and Hobgoblins. (Along with a plethora and new and truly unique opponents)

For example, here are all the types of Orcs – each with their own profiles, powers, attacks, and classes:

  • Orc Blitzer
  • Orc Bloodrunner
  • Orc Conduit
  • Orc Forcecaller
  • Orc Fury
  • Orc Garroter
  • Orc Godcaller
  • Orc Rampart
  • Orc Terranova

A similar diversity can be found for Gnolls, Goblins, Hobgoblins, and others.

But it doesn’t stop there, ‘Flee Mortals’ also provides new creatures or animals that are commonly found with Orcs like the Mohler and Scyza. There are unique companion creatures and animals for Gnolls, Goblins, and Hobgoblins as well.

The result is monster depth that isn’t found in the Monster Manual or other books. It provides an excellent source for a Dungeons Master’s imagination on what an Orc, Gnoll, Goblin, or Hobgoblin society or army would be composed of. Unlike the Grim Hollow books, (which I also love) these creatures are not totally new, but variants on traditional monsters we can identify with.

‘Flee Mortals’ is also available on Fantasy Grounds for those of you playing online. Best $39.99 I ever spent.
