I just started to play Dungeons and Dragons 5e is earnest about a year before the pandemic hit. We formed a group at work and played after work and ordered pizza in. We had a great group of players and an abundance of rooms and screens to use. We were in heaven!

Then the pandemic hit and I looked around for VTTs at that time. I looked at what were the three leading candidates at the time:

  • Roll20
  • Fantasy Grounds
  • Foundry

I know there are others but it really came down to Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds. Both Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds offered similar Virtual Table Top features. If anything, Roll20 was better in the pure Virtual Table Top features. Roll20 even had some add-ins that Fantasy Grounds didn’t easily like ambient music and sound effects.

So why did I select Fantasy Ground? Two things:

  • Fantasy Grounds Store – Fantasy Ground had a very slick and easy to use store to buy books, tokens, maps, and images.
  • Automation – if there was one thing Fantasy Grounds had that the others didn’t, it was out of the box automation. Fantasy Grounds had the ability to add all modifiers to dice rolls. Sure Roll20 could do it with extensions, but I didn’t want to play with technology outside of work. I had my fill of that at work.

So how has it turned out? Simply awesome. We are still playing Tuesday night and Fantasy Grounds has rolled out improvements with the Unity platform. It is a solid platform allowed for virtual campaigns when combined with Discord.

If you are looking for a VTT, give Fantasy Grounds a shot.
