I had an earlier post on Homebrew Travelling rules as I felt it was an area where the basic D&D 5E rules came up short.

I previously also created Homebrew crafting rules for a Curse of Strahd campaign as I felt it was another area that could be expanded on as well. I selected two aspects of crafting that were requested most by my players – crafting weapons and armor from superior materials and crafting potions.

I had always thought it was too easy to purchase potions and a better challenge would be to have players have to at least gather the materials and then seek out an apothecary to brew the desired potions. The same can be said about buying magical weapons and armor. Rather than being able to buy or unearth a finished weapon, it is a larger challenge to acquire the materials and then seek out a skilled smith that can create the weapon or armor for you.

I think I was influenced by the Ultima series of games where a significant investment of time was required to gather the ingredients to make the potions and spells you required.

Here are the Homebrew crafting rules I created. Please use and modify as you see fit.
